You should show familiarity with the central issues in your area and display an acquaintanceship with contemporary theoretical concerns.

In a simplified form your proposal will be divided into four sections:

Admission Requirements

Student numbers in these two programmes will be limited and entrance requirements will be a four-year BA (Fine Art), or a four year BA (Theatre and Performance), or a three-year BA (Film Media and Visual Studies) plus fourth year (Hons in Film Theory and Practice). Faculty rule FM3 applies (see Graduate School Student Handbook 2002, p. 12).

Prospective students who have completed undergraduate studies in other disciplines or institutions, or people who have been working in the industry, will be encouraged to apply for the programme if their area of study and/or portfolio justifies selection.

Strict selection will take place through interview + discussion of portfolio + proposal.

Preference will be given to students who have achieved well in their undergraduate studies.

A maximum of 20 students will be admitted to the two programmes combined over two years.

Acceptance into the programmes will be on the recommendation of the convenors and the Heads of the Drama and Fine Art Departments.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duration of Degree

Both MFA programmes will be run over two years. The first year will focus on coursework and the second year on the production of a practical thesis and a written explication supporting this creatrive research.

Students will be intensively engaged with their work: an average day will start at 09h00 and end at 17h00.

The MFA programmes are concerned with the total integration of theory and practice: theory is fully embedded in practice, practice fully informed by theory. Moreover, the component parts of the programme build on each other until the students have the full set of building blocks with which to produce the creative work. The programmes are thus conceived and designed in a holistic manner. Several modules are germane to both Film and TV, and New Media. Thus the programmes overlap at key points.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Assessment

Students must complete the practical thesis by the end of the second year of registration. A final presentation date will be set for final work to be submitted and presented to a body of external examiners.

Final written explications must also be bound and handed in for external examination.

Work submitted for examination must be photographically recorded and described in a composite document (print and web version), which must include a written explication of the theoretical basis of the work.

Research material accumulated during the weekly seminar series as well as in other courses will form the basis of the written dissertation.

Coursework constitutes 50% of the final mark and the practical thesis + written explication constitutes 50% of the final mark.

Successful candidates will graduate MFA in New Media, or MFA in Film and Television Production, during the Summer Graduation Ceremony.

Journalism is collecting, writing and reporting news and more broadly, it includes the process of editing and presenting the news articles. Journalism applies to various media including, but not limited to, news papers, magazines, radio, and television.

Also www, internet radio, internet tv, blog, internet journals and any other new media becoming more and more part of journalism work. The concept of participatory or citizen journalism proposes that freelance reporters can actually produce their own stories. Freedom of the Press is an inherent right of all free people.

The media landscape has changed forever. There is no sector of the economy that comes near to generating the performance of the INTERNET, which has established itself firmly in all areas of life and continues to expand. And even so, today we only see the tip of the iceberg. The markets of the future have merely been scratched. The perspectives of this medium – as viewed by the experts – are gigantic.
In the next few years the INTERNET will have a definite effect on our business world and on the work environment. New jobs will be created, new markets are going to be explored with new methods. Conventional communication systems shall fall by the wayside. Our present technology shall be history. No future-orientated enterprise will be able to secure its existence without taking this inescapable situation into account. Also the traditional journalism must adapt to these new media.
